Why most city pages fail
Google explicitly discourages thin, near-duplicate pages created only to funnel visitors into the same generic destination. If the only unique element on the page is a place name, you have built a doorway page, and it will either stay unranked or drag down the pages around it.
Start with demand, not with a list of zip codes
Build pages for cities where three things are true: people search for the service there, you can profitably drive there, and you have at least one completed job to point to. Everything else can be covered by a well-structured service page and your Google Business Profile service area.
The structure we use
- H1 combining the service and the city in natural language
- Two to three sentences on local conditions that affect the work
- Three to five real projects completed in or near that city
- Neighborhoods and landmarks the crew actually serves
- Local pricing context, permits, or code requirements
- Reviews from customers in that area
- A short FAQ answering city-specific questions
- One primary call to action, repeated once near the bottom
Internal linking is what makes the set work
Each city page should link up to its parent service page, sideways to two or three neighboring city pages, and out to any relevant article. The parent service page links back down to every city. That hub and spoke pattern helps crawlers understand the relationship and spreads authority instead of stranding pages in isolation.
Mark it up and keep it maintained
Add LocalBusiness or Service structured data with the correct areaServed values and validate it with the Rich Results Test. Then revisit each page twice a year to add new projects and new reviews. Stale location pages decay faster than any other page type.
Pair this with a properly configured Google Business Profile and the wider local SEO foundation.
Frequently asked questions
How many city pages should I build?
Start with three to five in your highest-value markets. Expand only when each existing page has real content and at least one completed project behind it.
Can I rank in a city without an address there?
In organic results, yes. In the map pack, proximity to the searcher still dominates, so expect organic wins first.
