The three metrics that matter
Largest Contentful Paint measures how long the main content takes to appear. Interaction to Next Paint measures how quickly the page responds when someone taps. Cumulative Layout Shift measures how much the page jumps around while loading. Google publishes the current thresholds on web.dev, and they change occasionally, so check rather than rely on memory.
Measure field data, not just lab scores
A perfect lab score on office wifi means little. Use the Core Web Vitals report in Search Console for real user data, then use PageSpeed Insights to diagnose a specific page. Test on a mid-range Android phone on cellular data, because that is who is calling you.
The fixes that usually deliver the most
- Compress and correctly size hero images, and serve modern formats
- Set explicit width and height on every image to stop layout shift
- Remove unused scripts, chat widgets, and tracking tags you forgot about
- Self-host or preload fonts and avoid render-blocking stylesheets
- Lazy load anything below the fold, never the hero
- Cut third-party embeds that load their own frameworks
When speed is a platform problem
If a site is carrying thirty plugins and a page builder, you can spend months chasing milliseconds. At that point the platform is the bottleneck, which is the argument in WordPress versus a custom build. Check the other symptoms in nine signs your website is costing you leads before deciding.
Frequently asked questions
Do Core Web Vitals directly affect rankings?
They are a real but modest ranking input. Their larger effect is on conversion rate, since faster pages produce more calls and form fills.
What is a good target for mobile load time?
Aim for the main content appearing in under 2.5 seconds on a mid-range phone using cellular data.
