The signs, and how to verify them
- Mobile pages take more than three seconds to become usable. Verify with PageSpeed Insights on a real phone connection.
- Your phone number is not tappable or is buried below the fold.
- Every service lives on one page, so nothing ranks for a specific search.
- Form submissions arrive without a notification, or go to an inbox nobody checks.
- You cannot edit content without calling a developer.
- Search Console shows impressions but almost no clicks, which usually means weak titles.
- The design predates responsive layouts and breaks on tablets.
- There is no analytics or call tracking, so nobody knows what works.
- Plugins or platform versions are out of date and flagged as insecure.
Confirm with data before you rebuild
Pull twelve months of Search Console data and look at impressions, clicks, and average position by page. If impressions are healthy and clicks are not, you have a titles and content problem. If impressions are missing entirely, you have a structure problem. Those two diagnoses lead to very different projects.
Repair versus rebuild
Repair when the platform is healthy, the content is decent, and the issues are speed, copy, or missing pages. Rebuild when the platform is unmaintainable, the structure cannot support service and location pages, or every change requires a developer. The cost comparison is laid out in what a website actually costs.
Protect the rankings you already have
Redesigns tank traffic when URLs change without redirects. Map every existing URL to its new destination, keep the titles that already earn impressions, and re-submit the sitemap on launch day. More detail in how to migrate a website without losing rankings.
Frequently asked questions
How often should a service business redesign?
Every four to six years for a full rebuild, with continuous small improvements in between. Sites that get regular attention rarely need dramatic overhauls.
Will a redesign hurt my rankings?
Only if URLs, content, or internal links change carelessly. With a proper redirect map, most sites recover within a few weeks and improve from there.
