Before you build: take inventory
Crawl the existing site and export every URL along with its titles, headings, word count, and internal links. Pull twelve months of Search Console data so you know which pages earn impressions and clicks. Any page with meaningful traffic or links must have a destination in the new site.
Build the redirect map first, not last
Every old URL maps to the single most relevant new URL using a permanent 301 redirect. Do not redirect everything to the homepage, and avoid redirect chains. Google's site move documentation is the reference to follow here.
Preserve what already works
Keep the titles and headings on pages that already rank well. Redesigns often rewrite everything for tone, which resets pages that were performing. Improve weak pages, leave proven ones alone, and expand rather than trim content that earns traffic.
Launch day checklist
- Remove any staging noindex tags and password protection
- Confirm robots.txt does not block the site
- Verify canonical tags point to the live https URLs
- Submit the new sitemap in Search Console
- Spot check the top 50 redirects manually
- Confirm analytics, call tracking, and form notifications fire
- Re-validate structured data with the Rich Results Test
Monitor for 60 days
Expect a small dip in the first two weeks while Google recrawls. Watch coverage errors, 404 reports, and average position weekly. If a specific page drops sharply, check its redirect, its internal links, and whether content was trimmed. Then return to the fundamentals in the local SEO playbook and confirm speed held up with the Core Web Vitals checks.
Frequently asked questions
How long should I keep redirects in place?
At least one year, and indefinitely for URLs with external links pointing at them. Redirects are cheap to keep.
Should I launch a redesign in my busy season?
No. Launch during a slower period so a temporary dip does not overlap with your highest-revenue weeks.
